Creativity can freely transform any object into another, any tool may become material to another. Using it on a daily basis, the beauty of a simple pencil can be unnoticed even if it allows us to express our thoughts and convey information.

For this reason, the Finnish designer Tuomas Markunpoika decided to use pencils to create a series of vases called Amalgamated, a collection that explores the relationship between a mass production ‘tool’ and its individual purpose.

The vases are created by gluing; in fact, taking advantage of the hexagonal shape of the pencils, the designer has pasted one facet of a pencil to another creating a single block. The block is subsequently worked on the lathe and turned into the final shape. The flow of each form reveals a different pattern of internal structure revealing the beauty of the pencil.

Amalgamated is available in different shapes – 30 cm tall (edition of 30) and 45 cm tall (edition of 18) – and a range of colour options. The entire collection is made in collaboration with the Gallery FUMI and Faber-Castell and it will be on show at Design Miami/Basel 2014.
