Where: Seljord, Norway

Photography: Dag Jenssen

The myth about a sea serpent in the lake of Seljord has become an integral part of how the local people of Telemark conceive its majestic landscape. Tales about mysterious phenomena in the lake have flourished for centuries and are a natural part of the daily life in the area.

In 2008, the municipality of Seljord decided to use this mythical feature as a point of departure for a development programme for the area. Together with the curators Springer kulturstudio, they commissioned Rintala Eggertsson Architects to design different lookout points around the lake to ease the access for local population and visitors to experience the lake at some important places. The assignment was divided into two parts; first to design three small installations in the mid- and southeast section of the lake and then to design a main viewpoint in the southwest end of the lake, close to the small town of Seljord.

The first part was organized as a building workshop with art- and architecture students and teachers from Nuova Accademia di Belle Arte and Politecnico in Milan and scenography students from the Norwegian Theatre Academy under our leadership. The whole workshop was thematically focused on the issue of anchoring man-made installations to characteristic features in the landscape without dominating them. The three installations are presented on the website under the title “Into the Landscape”.

In this second part the architects found ourselves dealing with anchoring again, not only because of the stunning beauty of the chosen site, but also due to the framework of the task which was all about mediating natural phenomena to a larger public. This time they were faced with a site with two pine trees with large canopies creating a natural place for rest and recreation.

This became the landscape feature on which it felt natural to anchor. As the room programme listed a viewing platform and a small shelter for exhibitions, it has been divided in two and place the two functions on each side of the trees, with a connecting deck in-between. The viewing platform was then given the form of a tower with a main space at the top overlooking the lake and two smaller spaces on the way to the top, one facing a nearby bird nesting area and the other one facing the crown of the two big pine trees. The platform was then given a connection to the nearby parking area with a narrow walkway designed by the collaborating landscape architects Feste Grenland.

With this organization one was able to establish a final destination by the lake with a distance from the town and the parking area which gave the visitor an experience of the landscape before arrival. A preparation for the visitor makes the meeting with the waterfront less abrupt; it gives the visitors a broader perception of the surroundings and allows for a travel onwards into a more personal landscape and into the myths around the serpent of the Seljord lake. The viewpoint becomes thus not the final destination, just a resting point between the landscapes of the known and the unknown.

Architects: Atelier Tomas Pucher

Where: Salzburg, Austria

The design combines a “double-comb” structure that accommodates treatment and examination rooms with a cross-shaped area dedicated for the ward and nursery departments. This distribution is completed by a final slab that host the laboratory and that integrates seamlessly the whole building. The building complex is delimitated towards the train lines by the slabs of the laboratory and the parking garage. These three elements merge into a very functional and yet peaceful structure that integrates perfectly into the surroundings.

The key concept of the general design of the building was to guarantee optimal performance, assuring minimum distances between functions and offering a clear overview of the structure and organization of the building. At the same time, it was also necessary to response to the requirements of the plot and its surroundings, and to the extreme complexity of a phased implementation. One of the main ideas was to integrate open green spaces throughout the building that would provide both natural light and a touch of nature.

These “pocket parks”, designed with different sizes and textures, offer a place for quiet contemplation and relaxation for staff, patients and families. These green areas also are known to have therapeutic qualities, by boosting rehabilitation and the wellbeing of its users.

The planning of extension of the Salzburg Regional Hospital has already started and the first phase of the project is due to be completed in first quarter of 2015.

Edited by Nicola Ruben Montini, art editor

24 h Museum
Francesco Vezzoli
From the 24th to the 25th of January
Palais d’Iéna, Paris

This short review was written at Starbucks (something we do miss in Italy, rue de l’Operà, Paris) on the 25th of January, just few minutes before the 24 h Museum closed to the public.

I flew to Paris less than 24 hours ago just in time to visit Francesco Vezzoli’ s last project: 24 h Museum, a super cool environment designed in collaboration with AMO, Rem Koolhaas’ think tank.
The 24h Museum opened yesterday, the 24th of January at the Palais D’Iéna, an historic Parigian Palace designed by Auguste Perret between 1936 and 1946, today home of CESE (Conseil Economique, Social et Environnemental).

The show, so as stated by the title itself, lasts 24 hours.
The format of a 24 hours show is not new in contemporary art events. It was conceived for the first time in 2006 for the 24-Hour Interview Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, in London, designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, who also has run the interview together with Rem Koolhaas, the event featured the biggest names of contemporary culture.
Perhaps we should assume that the 24-h format could be seen as a way to adapt exhibitions and art events to the fact that, nowadays, a show is generally visited at the opening and in the following few days/hours.

I was just in front of the main entrance of the 24 h Museum when a beautiful young lady approached me and suggested to introduce myself as a student who just missed his classmates’ group for the guide, or I couldn’t visit the show.
The 24 h Museum is a praise to the idea of beauty, through a tribute to classical icons and contemporary stars. As stated by Vezzoli on the website of the show “They are my icons turned into sculptures and placed on marble pedestals” (Francesco Vezzoli in L’Espresso, 21-12-2011, p.199).
At the opening night (super VIP – by invitation only) Miuccia Prada welcomes the guests such as monsieur Pinault with her wife Salma Hayek, Anna Wintour, Franca and Carla Sozzani, Dita von Teese, Louis Garrel, Anna Dello Russo and more super stars from the international Olympus of the cinema world, theatre, visual arts, fashion and music, all spheres of the creative world that Vezzoli has tried to “cross-mix” in his career, were delighted by the Dj set by Kate Moss.
The day after the party, the show was open to public and students were welcomed and guided by members of the educational department through the over-lefts from the party. A monumental – pink-lighted cage housed a series of reproductions of classical sculptures, which faces portrayed contemporary pop divas.

The show was produced by Prada (the biggest mentor of Francesco Vezzoli) and it has shown entirely the predominant role of the fashion industry on contemporary visual arts productions, both in the position of commissioners and/or collectors.

Since I stepped in the show, I have a question stocked in my mind: is the 24 h Museum an artistic intervention, an art show or a wonderfully glamorous promotion of a fashion brand during Paris Fashion Week?
Coming into the realm of ethics: given the economic crisis of this contingent historical era, is the 24 h Museum a nice way to show the public how VIP have parties or is a golden work to critic the decay of ethics?

Photos by David Shaw

David Shaw is a 2nd year BA Photojournalism studying at London College of Communication. His work is centred around human rights issues and is where he wants to further his career. he did an extensive work all over the West Bank of Palestine and in Israel and well as he worked with migrants and refugees who are stuck in Calais trying to get into Britain.

Bashar picks olives in the West Bank village of Qaryout

Every year the Palestinians harvest the olive trees that have been part of their land for centuries. However, due to the military occupation in Palestine, the farmers are subject to constant attacks by Israeli soldiers and idealogical settlers in the harvesting period.
The ancient trees are burnt down throughout the year effectively destroying hundreds of years worth of history and attacking an old Palestinian tradition that had been a fundamental part of their culture for generations.

The families are forced from their land due to “security reasons” at random and cannot continue the harvest, taking away a large part of their income and attacking basic human rights.

The Olive Harvest has become more than traditional harvesting, it has become a form of resistance. The Palestinians are aware that if they give up their land and stop harvesting the trees, Israel will claim it as their own.

The images in this story are from the villages Burin and Oaryout, two of the many villages across the West Bank and Gaza that experience these continuous attacks and attempts to have their land and culture taken away from them.
