Lawrence Oluyede, 28 years old, born in Treviglio (Italy), defines himself as a superhero with a marked attitude towards photography. Recently, he moved to Paris looking for new subjects. Let’s have a walk with him in the Parisian arrondissement to discover his favourite places.
Lawrence Oluyede, 28 anni di Treviglio (Italia), si definisce un supereroe, con una spiccata attitudine per la fotografia. Di recente si è trasferito a Parigi, girovaghiamo un po’ con lui per gli arrondissement alla scoperta dei suoi posti preferiti.
S. Hi Lawrence! Is everything fine? Where are you now?
L. Hi Sara, everything ok, thanks! I am in the 20th arrondissement of Paris.
S. Ciao Lawrence! Tutto bene? Dove sei adesso?
L. Ciao Sara, tutto bene. Sono nel ventesimo arrondissement di Parigi.
S. How is living in Paris? Do you like the area you are in?
L. Paris is definitely a place that overpasses the cliches we are used to. You need time to get your mind cleaned from them and to understand why this city is so beautiful as books, pohotographs and films descibe it. I mean, day after day. The place I live in is pretty calm but few metro stops later the district explodes of energy/vitality.
S.Come ti trovi a Parigi? Ti piace la zona dove sei?
L. Parigi è sicuramente una città che va oltre i cliché a cui siamo abituati, ci vuole tempo per ripulirsi la mente da essi e capire perché è così bella come la descrivono i libri, le fotografie, i film, ecc. Giorno dopo giorno insomma. La zona in cui sto è una zona abbastanza tranquilla ma poche fermate più in là il quartiere esplode di vitalità.
S. Why did you decide to move in Paris?
L. As a good superhero I go where people needs my help and if in the meanwhile I can also learn French… well, it’s great! Honestly, Paris was a quite casual choice, but later, thinking about it I realized that a wide part of the Occidental photography has a lot to do with France and in particular with Paris, be it the matrix or just a harbour for the photographers of the 19th century.
S.Come mai ti sei spostato a Parigi?
L. Da buon supereroe vado dove hanno bisogno del mio aiuto e se nel mentre imparo anche il francese, ben venga! Onestamente Parigi è stata una scelta un po’ casuale, ma poi ragionando mi sono ricordato che buona parte della fotografia occidentale ha a che fare con la Francia e Parigi in particolare, che ne sia la matrice o che sia porto di mare di fotografi del novecento. Questo ovviamente ha contribuito.
S. Whit regard to photography, did you recently find any interesting exhibition?
L. It is really hard for me to follow the huge amount of galleries and exhibitions that run in this city. I have seen five of them only in the last two weeks! The most interesting for me were the monographic one about Kate Moss, made up with photos realised by many different authors and exhibited in small gallery in the third arrondissement at Le Marais district and I was really mesmerised by the Truman Capote’s portrait by Richard Avedon I found in an exhibition of works realised by this American photographer.
S. A proposito di fotografia, hai trovato qualche mostra interessante ultimamente?
L. Faccio letteralmente fatica a stare dietro alla quantità di mostre e gallerie che ci sono in questa città. Ne ho viste cinque nelle ultime due settimane. Quelle più interessanti sono state la monografia su Kate Moss composta da foto di tantissimi grandi fotografi, in una piccolissima galleria nel terzo arrondissement, nel quartiere Le Marais, e il ritratto di Avedon a Truman Capote in una mostra composta da lavori del fotografo americano.
S. What about clubs? What did you discover?
L. I recently visited two renowned places: La Flèche D’Or and la Bellevilloise, both in the 20th. arrondissement. In particular, the second is a place where I’ve been many times to see artists’ collective exhibitions, concerts and also vintage markets. Actually, at the moment I am looking for hip hop and soul discos!
S.A livello di locali? Cosa hai scoperto?
L. Due piuttosto noti: La Flèche D’Or e la Bellevilloise, entrambi nel 20esimo. Il secondo in particolare è un locale dove sono stato più volte per collettive di artisti, concerti e addirittura mercatini vintage. Sono alla ricerca di discoteche hiphop e soul però!
S. In this regard, have you find some nice and still unknown shop?
L. I’ve seen a shop of this kind in Rue St. Martin, just after the Pompidou Centre, and I also have in mind a concept store of street wear, CLVII, in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in the 8th arrondissement, just above Avenue des Champs-Elysées, There, they have very interesting t-shirts and also a shop in Berlin.
S. A proposito, oltre ai soliti negozi noti, hai trovato qualche negozietto carino?
L. Ne ho visti alcuni molto carini in Rue St. Martin, appena dopo il Centro Pompidou, inoltre ricordo un concept store di street wear, CLVII in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré nell’ottavo arrondissement, appena sopra Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Hanno tshirt molto interessanti, e un negozio anche a Berlino.
S. What about your next adventure?
L. In August I’ll go for two weeks in New York City…who knows!

L.Ad Agosto vado due settimane ad esplorare New York… chissà!
