SC: Hi Stefano, where are you?
SA: I am in Budapest for the first time in my life and I am doing a workshop of sustainable architecture.

SC:Ciao Stefano, dove sei?

SC: Sustainable architecture?!
Yes! Budapest is an incredible city from this point of view! Let’s think about the development project and environmental management, the Living Danube – the biggest environmental investment in Europe of the year 2010, by which it will be possible to depurate the 95% of the waste water from the capital (at the moment it is at the 50% less or more, that is not bad anyway!). Moreover, also the reconstruction of the factory itself is interesting. This operation is based on sustainable parameters. A vegetal layer of ten thousand square mitres covers the whole structure, so that the surface absorbs the dust and the polluted materials, being able to isolate the ecosystem from the noise pollution made by the depuration machine. It is a good example of how the new architecture can combine modernity and sustainability.

SC: Architettura sostenibile?!

SA: I really had no idea that there were so modern structures! What do you think about the city for the young people?
The environment is very similar to the Barcelona’s one, and cosmopolitan too. This city in fact is one of the most relevant European capitals for cultural exchange. Due to this, Budapest offers a lot of possibilities for having fun at night in bars or fashionable clubs.

SC: Did you find any place in particular you liked the most?
SA: Some famous places are the Ruin Bars, such as the Szimpla. These are meeting places where have some drinks with friends, see the screening of a movie, listen to good music, or just have a chat. The Szimpla has been decorated with recycled furniture that had been thrown away (I really love the bath turned into a couch and the piano into a drinks cupboard!) and with rests of an old factory. Another famous and fashionable bar is the Mumus, which is an old local restructured with coloured walls, graffiti and wall projections…very striking!
These places usually are underground locals no longer in use that are recuperated in order to give the people a way to stay in touch and to meet again; I really think it is a good idea!

SC: There is a particular appointment for design?
SA: Yes, there is. One a month at Wamp market, the young designers can sell their creations, I think it is very interesting, only unique pieces! It takes place in the Erzsébet square during summer, while in winter it takes place in Godorklub.

SC: What about some nice shops you have seen here?
SA: I really liked a shop selling second hand stuff, the Jajcica, where you can also negotiate the prices. Something you can’t really miss is the typical Hungarian cake in the cake shop Molnar’s. I went to do some photos in a beautiful market close to the river: KÖZPONTI VÁSÁRCSARNOK. The products are for tourists, at the ground floor you can find spices, cakes and cold cuts, while on the first floor there are handicraft products. The whole structure of the end of 19th century really deserves a visit!

SC: E qualche negozio particolare?

SC: What do you take home from this journey?
SA: It has been a great opportunity to discover an unknown city…The outcome has been a mix between retro-grandma and electroboogie style. It has been a nice surprise and, belive me, it still remains so much to discover! A stop in this city should be a must for every young traveller!
