Martin Canova was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. His real name it is not Martin Canova. Martin doesn¥t like to talk too much about himself and his work because he thinks his works speaks for himself. He is also bored of answering the questions about what camera and what kind of film does he use because he thinks that all these technical issues are important but not essential. He was once involved in some theatre projects and he used to work a lot in music and film journalism in magazines in Montevideo and some other places around the world. He was finishing a movie script when he decided to put on hold that project to make music. He¥s band, Fiesta Animal, has released four albums, and his solo project, called La Mugre Roja, has three records and one EP. He recently formed a new band with Antonella Moltini, called La Guerra Electrica.

1) When did you start to think about photography?
My dad used to take a lot of photos when I was little. There are thousands of photo family albums in my house and I remember seeing them a lot during hours. Then, when I was at college I took photography lessons during two years. I was very keen on that during that time, but, I don´t know why, I stopped taking pictures the after that. It was years later when I knew my girlfriend, who takes a lot of beautiful pictures, that sometimes I took her camera from her hands to take some pictures. Quickly after that I started to took my own pictures with my father´s camera. I clearly remember made that decision after I spend a whole evening seeing photos of my girlfriend and also to other friends, Julia Saldain and Julia Corsaro in their fotologs. I remember also that that was at the same time I began to making music and quitting (for a while, but not forever) a movie project that I was into. I see the connection between this two events because I think that photography it´s a way to stay near films.

5) Do you think it’s important to follow a school to learn how to shoot?
The most important thing it´s to take a camera and start shooting.

6) What’s the photo you want to take and you never did?
A lot, It´s all to be made, I have a lot of ideas that I´ve never tried.
Besides I think it would be cool to take a photo of a ghost of an alien with his Ship. Or a two-headed redhead girl.

7) What’s your photo-mission?
Maybe it´s too obvious, but it is simply to take beautiful pictures. As I said, I try not to overthink too much in what I´m doing. I suppose I will found out about my mission while a took photos someday. Or maybe never. I don´t really care.
