This story is the result of several past pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago, an ancient spiritual trek across northern Spain, prior to any interest in photography, and then walking the Camino Primitivo and Camino Frances again as a photographer. The Camino is a special place, a spiritual trek, both more solitary and contemplative, yet at the same time, social and communal, and is a rare place of community, in a world becoming more and more fractured.
Popularly known as The quarry, the Bakoteh dump site is all that remains of an old strip mining. The craters the old stone excavations left behind now harbour the garbage of half a million people in Kanifing, the most densely populated region of The Gambia. This is an open pit mine where waste is disposed of indiscriminately and uncontrolled, which is causing a serious environmental impact and a constant threat to the population health.
“Infidels, pagans, non-believers,” these are terms the Islamic State (IS) uses when referring to minority groups within their reach. IS’s aggressive entry into Iraq, which is home to mostly Sunni Muslims, made additional targets of minorities who practice Yazidism or Christianity. Some of IS’s most vile tactics have been its public penchant for the abduction and forced conversion of children from these minority groups.
Iraq with its difficult history only recently began to recover from the wreckage of the US invasion in 2003. Then, in 2014, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) descended on the country in order to build their own state through acts of terror.
“Not my president”. This is the expression of anger we heard from 9th November along the streets. “I didn’t sleep tonight in order to follow the election’s scrutiny, it was about 2am when the news arrived. Since that moment I wasn’t able anymore to not to think on my venezuelan parents who have been living here in the States for a long time, but without a proper citizenship.
By the end of 2016 Venezuela had an official inflation rate of 180.5%* (*data from The Wall Street Journal, July 2016) – one of the highest in the world. However IMF predicts it to rise to 1642% in 2017.
