Exhibition Dates: June 5–30, 2025 | Opening: June 4, 2025
This June, Lisbon becomes the center of a powerful intersection between contemporary art, quantum physics, and consciousness with AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, a site-specific installation by Italian artist Chiara Capellini. On view at the Liceu Camões from June 5 to June 30, 2025, the exhibition invites visitors into a transformative space that bridges science, philosophy, and sensory experience.
A Site-Specific Exploration of the Invisible
Capellini’s installation draws inspiration from the Hermetic axiom “As above, so below”, suggesting a mirroring between microcosm and macrocosm, the internal and the external, the seen and the unseen. Grounded in the artist’s ongoing research into quantum theory and consciousness, the project reimagines the so-called void as a site of infinite potential.
In quantum physics, the vacuum is never truly empty. It teems with virtual particles, fluctuations, and unseen energy — a concept echoed in Capellini’s immersive installation, which interprets these ideas through layered visual and spatial experiences.
Art That Responds to Observation
The installation features six monumental canvases suspended across two levels. Each canvas explores the dynamic between light and shadow, presence and absence, and observer and observed. Their reverse sides absorb light in deep black tones, while their illuminated fronts reflect brightness, reinforcing the quantum idea that observation itself alters reality.
This duality—central both to physics and to spiritual traditions—is at the heart of Capellini’s work. By creating an environment that responds to movement and perception, the artist invites viewers to question the boundaries between reality and illusion, form and formlessness.
A Dialogue Between Art and Science
AS ABOVE, SO BELOW is more than an exhibition—it is an experiential dialogue between disciplines. Capellini’s fusion of abstract installation art with scientific inquiry offers a meditative experience where time seems to pause, and the invisible becomes tangible. The work speaks to an emerging trend in contemporary art that embraces the complexity of science to engage deeper questions of consciousness, perception, and existence.
