Interview with…. Jake Sigl

Jake Sigl is a young photographer who’s work has been seen in independent magazines across the United States. His distinct, raw photos continue to bring a refreshing outlook to his world.

1) Can you tell us something about you?
I’m an explorer. I’m enjoying my youth and making new discoveries.

2) Where do you live and work now?
I live in a small suburban town in California. Usually, I shoot in San Francisco. I am looking forward to doing more commissioned work.

3) How long have you been a photographer?

I had my first photo published about a year and a half ago, but I have been photographing for three years now.

4) How did you get into photography?

In 7th grade, I was in a yearbook class and wasn’t interested in writing, so my teacher gave me a disposable camera and said, “Take pictures of people. Get close to their faces.” So that’s what I did. And my passion grew more after that, and the next year I received a small digital camera for my birthday which quickly became my best friend. Inevitably, I wanted more. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had asked for a nice camera for Christmas. Curiosity got the best of me and I ended up looking in all my parents usual Christmas present hiding spots. I found it, and when my parents were out of the house I got the camera out, invited my friend over, and we took a walk and took pictures. When I saw the pictures on the computer I realized that I could actually pursue photography. It was definitely worth it, and I still think my parents don’t know.

5) Where does your inspiration come from?
Genuine, true experiences and honest people. Last summer I discovered how stunning nature is. And not just nature as in forests and sunsets, but everyday nature. Like simple houses and finding symmetry and patterns in unexpected places, I really just shoot what I see in front of me.

6) What do you think about street photography?
Street photography is extremely genuine and straightforward. It’s about sending a message, giving one new eyes to see from.

7) Can you tell us something about your portraits, what is important to focus for you?
The unwritten rule of taking good portraits is to get close to the subjects face, I disagree. I think that sometimes you can see more into a person when you see them interacting with their surroundings. Portraits are deeper than skin. For me, it is important to capture the subjects actuality, uncontrolled, as if I weren’t behind the camera taking a photograph. Sometimes I dream what it would be like to be invisible, and walk around with a camera. I would love that.

8.) What are your future works, do you have a special project?
I’m documenting the current financial irony in the United States. I am also very thrilled to be working with upcoming musician Dylan Fox on his album.
