Published last week the results of the Idea Competition issued by Arquideas for the design of a Winery. Participants could choose between three different project sites : La Roija Spain, Toscana Italy and Napa Valley in the USA.

This contest was open to all international students of architecture, individually or as a group of three members maximum. The most important wine producers have tried in recent years to introduce their brands to a wider public, not only through advertising their products directly but also through unique architecture designed by internationally known architects like the case of the Dominus Winnery in the Napa Valley, California designed by Herzog & de Meuron, Bodegas Ysios, the work of Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry’s Bodegas Marques de Riscal, both in La Rioja, Spain.

Eight project were awarded, 3 students of the Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, Javier Ureña Carazo and Isabel Rivas won the first prize with a project in the Rioja, Spain. The landscape is presented as a generator of the proposal and they modeling and shaping the different uses of the proposed program.


Juan Antonio Serrano García and Paloma Baquero Masats, Escuela Superior de Arquitectura de Granada are the winner of the second prize with a proposal in an alternative site in Villamena, Granada chosen based on the cause of an emerging new winery. This project shows an integration of the proposal in the landscape, which offers various experiences to the visitor when moving around the different areas of the vineyard.

Alejandro González Palacios, Luis Miguel Segui Urbita, Jorge Santacruz Bonilla won the third prize desining, again, in the Rioja. The project in focused on the topography and the sharp lines of vineyard crops form their structural morphology.
