CUT BACK? WE SAY FIGHT BACK!

At the end of last year England was shaken by a sudden wave of protests, strikes and demonstrations against the governments cuts in the public sector. London was strained several times by thousands of people who took to the streets to manifest their disapproval. Students were amongst the most angry as they perceived MP Nick Clegg as being a betrayal, who pledged during his campaign not to rise tuition fees. A plan to lift the cap on fees was proposed in late autumn and Clegg instantly became under criticism in the university environments.

As often happens, the media coverage of these protests only focused on limited aspects, preferring to show the sides that more suited their own agenda. Violence is usually only a small part of a civil protest, but it always grabs the attention of the public opinion, leaving little to be said about anything else. The police were called several times to protect the citizens and the demonstrators. They came under scrutiny on a few occasions for their hard handed manner of dealing with the crowd.
As Oscar Wilde said “It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion”. Violence is often prevalent part of disobedience and rebellion, but not always the most important and most noticeable aspect. In this case the protests had the potential to assume a more profound meaning: it was the occasion for the youth to shout out loud how worried they are about their future, and they did. Unfortunately this message was not conveyed thoroughly through the news mediums.
